Welcome to ACT's 2010-11 season! A new decade is here, and there’s never been a better time to “Get in on the ACT!” Asheville Community Theatre turns 65 this year and remains one of the oldest community theatres in the country. But we feel younger than ever. To celebrate our youthful exuberance we’ve put together a season bursting with music, energy, humor, and intrigue. musical by Lionel Bart based on the Dickens' novel Musical
direction by Chuck Taft A musical theatre classic to open our season… everyone loves Oliver! Based on the Dickens novel, Oliver! will engage the audience with its pathos and drama, while delighting everyone with its outstanding musical numbers. Food, Glorious Food, I'd Do Anything, Where is Love?, Consider Yourself, and As Long As He Needs Me. Dickens' characters are brought into larger-than-life focus in this ACT production.

A Christmas StoryPeace, harmony, comfort and joy? (maybe next year) Adapted by Philip Grecian from the story by Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown and Bob Clark Everyone knows what nine-year-old Ralphie Parker wants for Christmas: an official Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model air rifle - with a compass in the stock. But a seemingly insurmountable number of obstacles stand in his way including a host of adults (including Santa Claus!) who offer the same warning about the gun: “You’ll shoot your eye out!” Does he get his dream? RentNo day but today Music, lyrics and book by Jonathan Larson ACT is proud to present the 1996 Tony Award winning Rent, a hot rock opera that follows a group of bohemians struggling in modern day New York. Based on Puccini’s opera La boheme, Rent tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. A truly powerful story. |
Arsenic and Old Lace Poison by Elderberry Wine has never been so fun By Joseph Kesselring A delightful comic concoction which mimics the cozy charm and ingenious plotting of an Agatha Christie whodunit. This classic Broadway hit introduces the sweet, elderly Brewster sisters, their nut-bag nephew Teddy (who believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt) and their drama critic nephew Mortimer, who discovers his maiden aunts’ well-known charity work now extends to the compassionate poisoning of sad, lonely old men with glasses of arsenic-spiked Elderberry Wine. |
The Dixie Swim ClubFive Southern women whose friendships go the distance By Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten This Jones-Hope-Wooten comedy follows five Southern women who set aside a long weekend every August to recharge the friendships formed on their college swim team. Free from men, kids, and jobs, the women meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh, and meddle in each other’s lives. But when fate throws a wrench into one of their lives, these friends prove the enduring power of “teamwork” by rallying ‘round their own with the strength and love that takes this comedy in a poignant and surprising direction. |
